The Artfiles Mail System

With our self-developed mail backup system, we back up your emails at least ten times a day and enable you to easily restore lost or accidentally deleted messages.

Of course, not only your websites but also your emails are regularly backed up on the Artfiles mailbox servers. This protects them against technical errors, accidental deletion and malicious modification. We use a multi-stage backup process to ensure that your emails are absolutely secure with us.

All Artfiles mail servers store your data on RAID 6 or RAID 10 systems that can withstand the failure of individual storage units, such as hard drives or SSDs, without data loss. This allows us to replace defective disks during operation.

In addition, the data is always mirrored live to an identical system. This means that even the failure of an entire server only affects its services for a few seconds to a few minutes.

On the mirrored system, we use the performance that is not normally required to create snapshots of the mail inventory at short intervals. This takes into account a special characteristic of mail systems: the most important emails are usually the most recent ones. However, these would not normally be included in a daily backup if an emergency occurred in the meantime. The snapshots enable us to always keep a copy of all data that is only 1–2 hours old.

The most recent snapshot forms the basis for the actual backup. Our backup servers retrieve a copy of all stored mail data from there every day. The data is then retained on the backup servers for up to 28 days. To save storage space, only incremental backups are created, so each new backup state only stores the changes compared to the previous one.

A backup is only the first step in data protection. Restoring the backed-up data is just as important. We take a special approach here: unlike with many other providers, users can restore backups of their emails themselves. Whether it is just a single email, a complete folder or even the entire account – no problem with Artfiles Mail Backup.

And unlike many other solutions, the Artfiles backup system even takes new emails received in the meantime into account during the restore process and merges the data transparently, ensuring that no email is lost.
