BigBlueButton™ is a powerful video conferencing system that has established itself among companies, schools, and many other institutions requiring stable, GDPR-compliant communication, especially during the coronavirus pandemic.
The BigBlueButton project has existed since 2007, and the software has been continuously improved and developed ever since. BigBlueButton is firmly established as a virtual classroom solution in many learning management systems, such as Moodle.
Functions
BigBlueButton is not only one of the few GDPR-compliant solutions for online communication, but also offers many features that are often missing even in more expensive applications:
- BigBlueButton can be used both as flexible video conferencing software and for training purposes.
- Of course, you can also hold audio-only conferences.
- The system includes complete user and role management. All participants receive individual access data authorizing them for the corresponding conference rooms and functions.
- Presentations can be shared on-screen and documents can be viewed together. In addition, there is a polling function, a whiteboard, and the option to share the desktop screen.
- During a BBB meeting, smaller groups can be formed in so-called breakout rooms, where participants can exchange ideas independently of the main conference.
- BigBlueButton includes a chat function that can be used to take notes on what is happening on screen. Chat messages can either be visible to everyone or exchanged only between individual participants. This allows collaborative documentation or a shared basis for further work to be created during discussions or presentations.
- With the telephone function, we offer the option of integrating phone calls into a BBB conference. Participants can dial into the conference using a telephone. For this purpose, we set up a dedicated dial-in number for each server. This service can be booked as an option. Please refer to the product table above for pricing.
Data Protection and Security
In contrast to the majority of available online conferencing solutions, BBB can be operated in a fully security-conscious and GDPR-compliant manner:
- The server location is in Germany.
- A Data Processing Agreement in accordance with Art. 28(3) GDPR (DPA) has already been signed by us and is available for you.
- All communication between the server and clients is transmitted in encrypted form.
- On request, the standard recording function can be completely disabled during installation.
- We regularly take care of security and software updates.
If you do not deactivate the recording function, it is your responsibility to ensure the necessary transparency for participants. In this case, the system will create a recording for each conference. All server-side recordings are deleted automatically after 14 days by default.
